Picking out a color scheme is one of the hardest things ever. It is so hard to decide because you want to mix in all of your favorite ones, but that doesn't mean they work together. Illustration sets up planned swatches, and color schemes that work well together. I think that would be a great start, because then you can get inspired by the colors, play with them and their values, and create something new and cool.
